Programme Overview

How the programme works

Swimming teacher training courses require trainee teachers to deliver practical teaching sessions in the water. Through partnerships with Approved Training Centres (ATCs), IATDE People CIC helps bring swimmers from local communities into these training environments. Participants attend swimming sessions while trainee teachers gain real teaching experience as part of their qualification.

This creates a simple but powerful model that benefits both communities and the aquatics workforce.

Who the programme supports

The programme aims to increase access to swimming for people who may not otherwise have the opportunity to learn.

Young people

with limited access to swimming lessons

Communities

where swimming participation is low

Targeted groups

such as non-swimming teenage boys

Individuals

who may face financial or social barriers to participation

By working with community organisations, youth groups and charities, the programme helps identify and support those who could benefit most.

Removing barriers to participation

For many families, even the basic costs associated with swimming can be a barrier.

Future development of the programme will explore ways to support participants with essential equipment such as swimwear, goggles and other basic items needed to take part in lessons. Through partnerships with sponsors, donors and community supporters, the programme aims to ensure that no one is prevented from learning to swim because of financial barriers.

Why this programme matters

The programme delivers impact in two key ways.

Community Impact

Increasing access to swimming lessons

Supporting communities with lower participation in swimming

Supporting communities with lower participation in swimming

Workforce Impact

Providing real teaching experience for trainee teachers

Helping train the next generation of swimming instructors

Strengthening the aquatics workforce

By connecting these two outcomes, the programme creates a sustainable model that supports both community wellbeing and the future of swimming education.

Supporting the programme

The programme is supported through a combination of partnerships, funding and community support.

Local businesses, organisations and individuals can all play a role in helping more people learn to swim and improving water safety in communities. Small contributions can have a significant impact by helping to fund lessons, support teacher training, and remove barriers that prevent participation.
