Assessment Information
This course includes a variety of assessment methods as detailed below:
- Blended learning via STA online
- Multi-choice question paper
- Assessment of a practical teaching session, which is recorded and sent via email to the course tutor. Please see the ‘Practical Assessment’ tab for more information.
All practical elements must be completed and performed independently by the learner without prompting by the tutor within 6 weeks of booking the course.
The skills within the course and during the assessments must be performed in line with the most current version of the STA Swimming Teacher resource manual.
Multi-choice assessments
The multiple-choice assessment for the upskill is completed remotely via a system called Cirrus. You also must ensure the following are ready at your allocated assessment slot. Failure to do so will result in a resit fee of £50:
- Stable internet connection
- Working webcam or laptop camera – note a mobile device or tablet will not work
- The most up-to-date version of Chrome with Admin rights available for the device
- Mic, speaker or headset/earphones
- Photographic ID.
You can make notes on plain paper.
You will be sent an email confirming the data and time and be sent an email by IATDE with your username and password and the link to the online assessment.
Once logged in you will need to:
- Show your photo ID to the webcam (either passport or driving licence)
- Move the webcam around the room to ensure there are no additional items that will aid you in the assessment.
Re-assessments
While we hope this wont apply to anybody we are aware that sometimes nerves get the better of us! Where this is the case if a learner is unsuccessful of any part of the assessment process they will only have to re-sit the required element. If this is on the multiple-choice question paper, then only the specific units that have been failed will need to be resat, not the whole paper.
Resits must take place within 6 weeks of the fail and incur a minimum charge of £25. For resits using Cirrus, there is an additional £20 licence fee for the exam, due to the costs we incur to access and use the system. This means Cirrus rests are at least £45.
Pre-requisites
To access this upskill you need to hold the STA Award in Teaching Swimming qualification.
Please ensure that after booking this course, you email us a copy of the certificate so we can process this and add it to your record. We are unable to certificate without it.
Practical Assessment
You must record a 30-minute lesson in which you deliver a session to a group of at least 4 swimmers, with either diving, rescue techniques, or survival skills as the main theme. Your warm-up and contrasting activity can be on any topic you wish. This must be within 6 weeks of you commencing the course, therefore, if you wish to purchase and start at a later time, please let us know – we can accommodate this easily for you!
The recording should be set up to show all swimmers and the teacher. The recording should also capture the instructions and tuition given by the teacher.
Before the lesson commences, the teacher must state their name, the date of the recording, and show some ID, such as a passport or driving licence, to the camera.
The recorded lesson can be shared with IATDE via services such as Dropbox, WeTransfer or iCloud. We can provide upload links to enable the safe, secure transfer of the file.
Once the file has been reviewed by the tutor and all post-course moderation is complete, it will be deleted. This is usually within 90 days of the course completion.
